The Women in Academic Economics Report 2024 highlights persistent structural barriers limiting women’s representation and career progression in the field. Women make up 29% of academic economists in the UK, but just 18% of professors, reflecting a continuing “leaky pipeline.” The gender pay gap remains at 13%, with little improvement over the past decade.

Women are disproportionately concentrated in teaching-focused roles (40%) that offer fewer opportunities for advancement compared to research positions. At the student level, the pipeline remains narrow, with women comprising only 32% of undergraduates and 39% of PhD students in economics.

Without targeted action on pay equity, career progression, and student recruitment, these disparities risk becoming entrenched. The report calls for systemic changes, including greater transparency in promotion criteria, improved support for women in research roles, and a more inclusive academic culture.
