The effects of monetary compensation on paid volunteers: Evidence from Germany
Abstract:
In recent decades, volunteering has expanded from completely unpaid work to the possibility of receiving small (tax-free) monetary compensations for the activities performed. However, previous research has shown that the effects of monetary incentives in the context of prosocial behavior are likely to differ from the effects on paid work in the labor market, which casts doubt on the effectiveness of tax incentives in this context. Using data from German income tax returns, this paper investigates the effects of changes in monetary compensation on duration of voluntary work, donations, and market labor income of paid volunteers.
