WiE (The Women in Economics Initiative) was established in 2019 and ever since then, we have worked over the past five years to promote equal opportunities and diversity in economics. Since we were founded, we have focused on ensuring that people of all genders and backgrounds have visibility and representation in the field.
To celebrate WiE's 5th anniversary, we’ve created a special brochure to showcase our growth and achievements over the past five years, along with the incredible contributions of our dedicated volunteers. Inside, you'll find stats and figures about our growth as well as personal reflections on our volunteer's WiE journey and their wishes for our future. We hope you enjoy reading their stories as much as we appreciate their passion and commitment. Here's to many more years of progress and impact!
Five Years of Growth and Impact
WiE’s journey began with seven founding members—five women and two men—all based in Europe. Today, our volunteer base has grown significantly, with over 60 active volunteers from across the globe, including the US, Latin America, India, and Bangladesh.
Our formal membership has more than doubled in the past three years, growing from 217 members in September 2021 to over 1,100 by September 2024. Our community now spans every continent, reflecting the global reach of our mission. Our social media presence has also seen impressive growth, with our LinkedIn following increasing from 1000 in September 2021 to over 3,600 in September 2024, and X/Twitter growing from 1,700 to 3,800 followers during the same period.
This growth is not just about numbers—it’s also about the invaluable work done by our volunteers working in 9 Teams “behind the scenes” to make WiE a vibrant community!
